About Horizons

You may have read in the Terry Tribune about the Horizons Program. This is a program sponsored by the Northwest Area Foundation to provide support for rural communities. While the focus of Horizons is on poverty reduction, this is meant in a broad sense. It simply means that rural communities many times lack the resources they need.
STUDY CIRCLES
The fist step in the Horizons Program was a series of Study Circles. The purpose of these Study Circles was to provide a forum where people can talk productively with each other and find ways to work together to solve public problems. As a result of these Study Circles, many new community projects have been launched. One of the community projects that is in the works is a town beautification project that combines Xeriscape landscaping and a sign to welcome residents and visitors to Terry. Another project being pursued is the development of hiking and ATV trails.
LEADERSHIP PLENTY
The second step in Horizons was LeadershipPlenty. Two LeadershipPlenty courses were offered in Terry, one in the spring and one in the early summer. These courses resulted in empowered community leaders. Have you noticed the new THS sign and landscaping? That was a project of the first LeadershipPlenty Course offered at the high school.
VISIONING
The third phase of Horizons is Visioning. This gives the community a chance to think about and act on long-term changes. Surveys were distributed for public input and a Community Visioning Event took place on December 13th. At the Visioning Event, participants drafted a vision statement and began to identify action items that will help achieve the vision.
